Just a few notes that I may come back to or may help or interest others.

Video on a projector

To have video output from mplayer sent to the projector, one needs to run:

xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v 1

To return the XV output back to the screen, set -v 0. See: getting Xv on the projector.

Bluetooth

Followed the Gentoo Bluetooth guide and managed to connect to my phone (though the connection sucks; guess the computer bluetooth antenna is bust).

I ended up with mounting the phone with the FUSE filesystem and moving the pictures from my phone. The bad connection slows the download a lot and since the phone has to lie on my keyboard, I can't really work while I'm connected. I wrote a quick script to automate this (wildcards don't seem to work on the filesystem).

#!/bin/bash

device_mac='00:18:AF:32:7C:C1'
device_mountpoint='/mnt/cdrw/'
device_dir='MMC/Pictures/'
base_local='./'

mount -t fuse "obexfs#-b${device_mac} -B6" $device_mountpoint
for filename in $device_mountpoint$device_dir
do
  mv -i $filename sam-$(exiftime -t g $filename | sed -e "s/.*: //" -e "s/:/./" -e "s/:/./" -e "s/ /-/").jpeg
done
umount $device_dir
